Karlos is back and ready for another day of drumming at Hogan Music! If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to play drums/percussion for a huge artist or band, get signed up ASAP! On this one-day course you’ll be exploring and perfecting different techniques, experimenting with auxiliary percussion, playing along to some top tracks and have the opportunity to quiz Karlos on his career to date.

Suitability: You’ll need to be 10-18 years old and at least grade one standard on drum kit to take part.

Jazz & Blues Piano Music Course with Tim Richards

Piano Workshop & Performance with Tim Richards

Learn all about jazz, blues and improvisation with the inspirational pianist, Tim Richards. Tim has been present on the UK and international jazz scene since the early 1980s and has toured and recorded with the likes of Otis Grand, Dana Gillespie and Earl Green.

This is a practical workshop so you’ll be in front of a piano most of the time. It’s a fantastic opportunity to explore these different genres and try something new! You’ll also get to hear Tim perform himself in a free lunchtime recital, 12:45-1:15pm, as well as have the opportunity to purchase some of his popular books.

The morning workshop is ideal for all pianists grade one and grade two standard while the afternoon is idea for grade three to five piano students. Both workshops are open to both children and adult learners.

Learn to Drum (under 16s)

with Will Brunsden

Try something new in 2022 and sign up for one of our learn to drum courses with in-house expert drummer, Will Brunsden, taking place on Saturday’s between 2pm and 3pm. In these six-week courses you’ll learn how to assemble a drum kit, master some basic stick technique, learn basic grooves and rudiments and play along to four chart toppers. To take part, all you need to do is get a grown to complete our sign-up form and get hold of some drum sticks! All participants will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the course. Stylistic Development for Drummers

a series of specialist workshops exploring different genres and their associated skills, grooves and techniques

Dive deeper into popular genres of drumming with our very own drum kit specialist Will Brunsden. Each fortnight during the summer term, you’ll spend two hours taking a whistle-stop tour of a different genre, exploring and developing a toolkit of new techniques, rhythms and grooves needed to play in that style. These sessions take place between 6 and 8pm on a Wednesday – dates below.

Blues: Weds 4th May 2022, 6-8pm


GROOVE: Shuffle groove and variations in different subdivisons.
TECHNIQUES: Applying different parts of the stick to the hi-hat to change the timbre.
SKILLS: An awareness of the difference between a straight groove and a shuffle groove.

Explore music by the giants of Blues such as BB King, Robert Johnson, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and many more.




Jazz: Weds 18th May 2022, 6-8pm


GROOVES: Learning to swing and playing swung groove variations on the ride.
TECHNIQUES: Stick position on the ride cymbal, developing a left foot 2 and 4 ostinato and feathering the bass drum.
SKILLS: Playing a swung groove and applying four-way co-ordination.

Expect to hear music from the likes of Miles Davies, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Theleonious Monk and many more.




Rock and Metal: Weds 1st June 2022, 6-8pm


GROOVES: Straight 8th and 16th note Rock and Metal grooves played in various time signatures. Other subdivisions will be covered and reapplied to double bass pedal grooves.
TECHNIQUE: Double bass drumming and co-ordination.
SKILLS: Playing a double bass groove while keeping a consistent backbeat.

Expect to hear music from the likes of Royal Blood, Bring me the Horizon, Metallica and many more.




Electronic: Weds 15th June, 6-8pm


GROOVES: Applying grooves from other styles of music in an electronic notion.
TECHNIQUE: Improve time keeping and understanding of the crossing over of other techniques from other styles.
SKILLS: Learn a deeper understanding of syncopation in different subdivisions, while achieving an electronic-processed sound through an acoustic instrument.

Expect to hear music from the likes of Marshmallow, the Prodigy, Aphex Twin, Daft Punk and many more.




World Drumming: Weds 29th June, 6-8pm


GROOVES: Latin, Bossa Nova, samba, Songo and Afro Cuban grooves.
TECHNIQUE: Understanding the basic of clave patterns and applying four-way co-ordination.
SKILLS: The application to the drum kit of claves with foot ostinatos. Students will aim to understand what makes them different from each other.

Expect to hear music from the likes of Fela Kuti, Horacio "El Negro" Hernández, Alex Acuna and many more.




Hip-Hop: Weds 13th July, 6-8pm


GROOVES: The re-application of grooves from a wide array of genres within this style.
TECHNIQUE: The reapplication of the shuffle groove along with Funk and swung 16th note grooves.
SKILLS: Learn a deeper understanding of syncopation in different subdivisions, while achieving an electronic-processed sound through an acoustic instrument.

Expect to hear music from the likes of The Roots, D’Angelo, Drake, Stormzy and many more.




Reggae and Ska: Wed 27th July, 6-8pm


GROOVE: Learning the difference between a one drop feel, Stepper and a rocker.
TECHNIQUE: This will work on your confidence in playing syncopated/swung hi hat rhythms, applying the cross stick and ghost notes.
SKILLS: Establishing awareness between straight and swung grooves in a Reggae-Ska style.

Expect to hear music from the likes of Bob Marley, The Specials, Jimmy Cliff, and many more.
